about
Somewhere between The Monkees and Slade resides Songs About Leaving. A hyper-danceable Power Pop tune about Frankenstein, mimes, and getting the hell out of Dodge.
"Songs About Leaving" first appeared in 2019 in a much mellower Folk ballad form. The second draft was completed in 2020 and had the chorus practically full-formed, but the verses and pre-chorus were very different. The verses would eventually become another song (more on that some other day). In late 2021, the chorus was put with freshly-written verses creating the version of "Songs About Leaving" heard today!
lyrics
I'm the son
Of the bride of Frankenstein.
I'm strictly confidential and essentially
Out of time.
They think I'm gonna wind up dead
'cause I know better than to lose my head
Sittin' in the dark with a knife through my heart again.
I'm the one
And the only friend of mine.
I'm a mongrel and a martyr and a monster and a
World class mime.
Don't really want to start a fight
As I try to avoid the night
In the back of an alley with a pistol in my face again.
Well I've fought to stay alive
Since I first arrived
But now my mind's been occupied
With songs about leaving.
Yeah yeah yeah!
I'm sick
Of all the sins I've seen.
They've left me down and dirty,
Low and ravin' mean.
I ain't got no crystal ball
To cushion me when I fall
Down in the gutter with a bottle in my hand again.
Well I've fought to stay alive
Since I first arrived
But now my mind's been occupied
With songs about leaving.
Yeah yeah yeah!
SOLO
Well I've fought to stay alive
Since I first arrived
But now my mind's been occupied
With songs about leaving.
Yeah yeah yeah!
